Have you ever gotten angry, become unreasonable, and begin a list of all the vengeful things you would like to do to the person who really got under your skin? And sometimes it feels so awful that you even want to give up. Sometimes there is no external solution to be found and that can be aggravating. That was me today until I found one second of reason, and my mind told my body, "go for a walk."
Just a little background to see if maybe you can join me. Pretend someone has their first interaction with your well established, successful business, and proceeds to insult your company, your employees, your judgment and tries to get you to believe their viewpoint so they list their degrees, their IQ ranking and also how valuable their disposable income is to you. (You can't make this crap up.) I did, however, notice she omitted her EQ scores.
I am going to guess you are shaking your head, murmuring a few expletives and perhaps willing to join in my vengeance. Thank you in advance for your kindness, but it's all good, at least now it is.
Why? When someone is dealing with their own stuff, and, they have negative feelings, you can't take this. They own their feelings, and we own our reactions. I took her explicit comments to heart, I pondered solutions (and yes, of course, I sent her money back and tried to understand her perspective, as the owner, I apologized,). When something hits at just the wrong moment, we question ourselves. "Perhaps I just am not cut out for this industry anymore."
Then I bought myself some time. Meditation is a massive part of my life and is the thread that sometimes holds me together. Today it held me together and glued Humpty Dumpty back together again.
In a nutshell, walking meditation is the same as any other meditation, but there is an added component of movement. It takes practice and an open mind, but once you get the hang of it, it's magical. Not only observing the coming and going of your thoughts (and mine weren't very helpful) but the sensations of your body in movement, the wind in your hair, the sun on your face the gratitude in your heart that you can walk. Dang if that didn't just bring me back to the earth with a clearer mind. (PS you can even do it running!)
So, I bought myself some time, just enough time to make my reaction what I wanted it to be. I honor that person's judgments, but I don't have to retaliate or own them. I won't close my business, fire my employees who I adore or send thousands of happy clients away. No, I just need to keep doing the best I can, succeeding sometimes and failing others.
And most importantly, always being grateful that meditation does actually change the landscape of my brain and reminds me that my internal wisdom is often smarter than my IQ.
So I welcome you to consider, the next time you have an awkward moment, to insert a wee bit of quiet time. Time to be and not to do or think. Meditation comes in many forms and can be done sitting, lying down, walking, standing...and doesn't need to take a lot of time or study. Give it a try and if you need help I am always just a click away. www.alexazmeditates.com
